Hiking Torres del Paine, W Circuit: Day 2

Our second day in Torres del Paine begins with a hearty breakfast: milk, oats, and mate. At 9.30 we are ready to leave!

On our way to Los Cuernos we find a guanaco overlooking a hill, probably guarding his family grazing way down. A gringo named Nathan joins us, and together we keep a fast pace to Los Cuernos. My shoulders begin to hurt a lot: once in Los Cuernos, I notice that the sleeping bag slipped on one side of the backpack, unbalancing all the weight I was carrying.

In Los Cuernos there are platforms where to pitch your tent. The good thing: we are the third group arriving from Central so we can choose our platform. We choose a big one. The bad thing, we already knew it, is that this camping site, managed by Fantastico Sur is one of the most expensive: 40000 CH$ each for a platform and three meals – breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Nathan keeps on his way to the Glaciar Grey – pretty long walk: even the rangers told him he wouldn’t be able to reach the lookout.

At 2 pm we start again: we already know it won’t be possible to reach the Mirador Britanico, but we are determined to at least try to be at Mirador Francés before the closure of the trail (at 4 pm). We reach the Campamento Italiano, managed by CONAF, at 3.25 pm. A little break with snacks and we are ready for the last trait.

We, unfortunately, reach the Mirador Francés at 4.30 pm – the last uphill is pretty steep, and on some traits, we walk on pure stones and little water canals. Furthermore, the weather is getting bad.

We stay on top for 20 minutes enjoying the uproar of big ice chunks detaching from the glacier, resulting in small but powerful avalanches.

We slowly make our way back to Los Cuernos. The lodge is cool. There is as well a small shop selling chocolate and little snacks; bathrooms are nice and I profit to take one long, hot shower after dinner.

Goodnight!

Snacks: 3 cereal bars – dried fruit

Dinner (in the lodge): soup – rice with chicken – dessert
